Ending the season on a high note
The theme “Heat Wave” didn’t begin to describe this past weekend for the Royals.
The hottest match of the season was played against the Columbus Coyotes on Saturday, May 5 at Tuckaseegee Park. Before kick-off at 1pm, both sides were already drenched in sweat during warm-ups. The heat didn’t keep the fans away though… with their parcels in hand and plenty water to hydrate; the stands were filled with Royals fans to cheer them on their final match of the season.
It was decided that this match would be played as Rugby 10s instead of 15s due the low number of players on both sides. Adam “Pinky” Stegall, joined the Coyotes since they didn’t have a hooker on their side to compete. It was long before a fellow teammate bumped heads with him and broke his nose forcing him out of the match. At least his nose matched the jersey! Another causality of the match was William Howell with injured ribs. Though injuries and exhaustion occurred on both sides; each team played strong through the heat. After half, Columbus struggled to keep cool in the southern humidity resulting in a final score of 76 to 7.
The Royals finished the season 2-3, and ranked 4th at St. Louis’ Spring Fever Tournament. With this season’s record, they are definitely ready to represent the Carolinas at Bingham Cup this summer in Manchester, UK.
Go Royals!!!
